The project is a home for elders renovated by a previous primary school.
The design has two challenges: 1. to provide a building that is both open and private; 2. to rethink the new spatial and social relations in this remote village in China.
The strategy provides four yards around the building communicating with surroundings by transferring the layout from an “L” to an “X.”

In the Matsumoto House in Hyogo, Ando attempts to recreate the contrast between nature light and sky light as Kahn did in his Kimbell Art Museum by doubling up the enclosure of the house to create two overlapping skins (one thick and one thin.) ‘The house turns its back on the street and opens towards its garden through a kind of double-skinned portico.

The building takes advantage of landscapes around it because it's located on the top of the hill, which encourages creating four yards.
